While traveling out-of-state last weekend, somehow our neighbor's story from years ago came to mind and I could hardly wait to get home and share it with you all!In some locales, "knock me up in the morning" means for the bellhop to knock on a guest's door to awaken the occupant. When I was in high school in central US, when a guy "knocked up a gal" it meant that he had impregnated her and put her in a family way.Our neighbor died in 1982 and his widow enjoyed company. She told of an accident that one of their truckers was involved in locally with 3 young college females from Britain travelling the North America on vacation. I don't remember whether they all ended up in the hospital or not, but much to the chagrin of the insurance agents, our neighbors became quite good friends with them during their recuperation because they felt an obligation to the young women who had no other friends or relatives living in this country. So much for background.Now the short story: One of the young gals was telling about their trip through Canada before entering the US. She said that she learned right quick not to tell the bell-hop to "knock me up first thing in the morning." (!!!)
