Growing up, it was a taboo subject so when I finally started masturbating it was always in private and I never talked about it. There were always jokes about doing it and it was implied that guys were losers if they masturbated.

Open rather than vocal. I’ve always said I’ll answer any question someone asks me, particularly about sex but I’m not one for volunteering information. I don't think it's as taboo to talk about now as it was when I was younger--unless it's just that now that I'm older, I'm not as afraid to talk about it.

I played around with my friends growing up, but when I discovered masturbation, I didn't talk about it with those friends since I jacked off constantly and I thought my friends would think I was some kind of perv or sex fiend. My friends didn't talk about it either, even when one buddy and I jacked each other off. Another time a different buddy asked me if I jacked off. I was kind of hesitant to answer, out of embarrassment, but he told me that he did it like once a week or so. When he said that, I readily admitted that I did it once a week or so too. I did not admit that I actually did it daily--sometimes several times a day. I didn't want him to think I was a maniac, though I would imagine that he was doing it just as often as I was but he didn't want me to know that either. He had asked me because he wanted to know if I wanted to jack off with him. I did. And we did.

When I was in college, the subject of masturbation didn't come up for a long time. My sophomore year the RA on my floor called an impromptu wing meeting where he told us he wanted to talk about his problem with masturbation. That shocked me. Instead, as soon as he told us of his problem he was quick to reassure us that if we masturbated there was nothing wrong with that, but for him it had become an obsession, so that was his problem--not masturbation itself. I wonder now if he really told us in order to keep himself accountable or if he thought it was a way to find other guys who were just as "obsessed" to jack off with him. If I'd been braver, I might have tried to find out.

A year later I was sharing an apartment with 5 other guys and we were all sitting around one night and somehow the subject of masturbation came up and we talked openly about it, which was actually pretty cool (and not a little arousing). It was great to be able to talk about it.

As an adult there were some people I could talk about it with or we would joke and drop hints that we did it, but we didn't get into graphic details. Don't have any issue letting people know I masturbate if the subject comes up. This of course is a big switch from when I was younger and it was considered taboo.
