If a user doesn't accept Private Messages from non-friends, how about this is made obvious before I've spent time composing a message? So frustrating to waste your time but find out only when pressing Send...

I agree. Has happened on a number of occasions when a person has sent me a private message and my reply is rejected because they only accept messages from friends.
