Have done a little sounding experimentation - alcohol for everything, even on the end of your shaft, frankly...

For 1st timers you can sterilize the tip of the end of a K-Y tube and squeeze some lube gently into your shaft, since you need lube before anything else anyway, and it will give you a mild sense of what you'll feel if you take things the next step...

I have a smooth, plastic ice tea/ ice cream spoon with a long round-shaped handle, (cross-sectionally), that worked great for a while, until alcohol or other sanitizer started disintegrating the smooth surface. 

Also strung together about 6 inches of smooth oval/egg-shaped chrome-plated or onyx like beads onto a piece of stiff plastic-coated craft-wire, with any pointy ends rolled up and twisted safely into the end like a ball at the end for a "handle". It's flexible, cleans easily, maybe less than a 1/4" in diameter, and does the magic!

Slow is the key too, and precum or other lube way down there first!

Stroking your shaft or sliding the "sounder" in and out accomplishes about the same great feelings. "Bottoming out is at a point far enough in that hurts and is like the pinch off point from your bladder, don't go past that unless it's with a catheter!

I'm a mechanic and my favorite object to sound with is a pushrod from a Ford V-8 engine. It has been cleaned and sterilized.
