Aunt Tells Us a Story

This story took place in the 1980s when I was a teen.  My aunt worked at a state mental hospital for over 20 years as a nurse.  It was an old and controversial facility that eventually closed down about 1980.  A few years after it closed, my aunt was over at our house for the weekend which really meant I was on my own upstairs in my room while my aunt and mother drank wine until the wee hours as my uncle and father were out ice fishing.

Anyway, my aunt was always a great storyteller and she typically got louder with each drink, so even though I wasn’t intentionally eavesdropping, I tended to hear her side of every conversation unless I drowned her out with my headphones.

My aunt began to tell my mother stories about the asylum and how a good number of the men would spend literally hours each day masturbating in their rooms.  My mother seemed shocked and I recall my aunt telling her how even though the ages of these men ranged from 20s to 50s, they seemed to have the ability to go and go and go with minimum downtime.  In addition, the doctors had instructed the nurses not to intervene in any way as long as the men did not touch anyone else while they masturbated.

I found this fascinating and I have to say that this knowledge has impacted my views of masturbation, widely held refractory period beliefs and more.  In the 1980s, masturbation was still frowned upon not only by most of society, but there were still many books sitting in public libraries that either condemned it outright or warned of harm that would become a “chronic masturbator”.

One thing I realized regarding refractory periods is that at least in my experience, if you expect to go again, your chances in doing so increase – particularly as a young man.  Once your mind and your body are conditioned to do so, it becomes more natural….just my experience!
