Re: Sex/Porn

In 2016, AASECT (the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors and Therapists) issued a statement, saying that it did not,”…find sufficient empirical evidence to support the classification of sex addiction or porn addiction as a mental health disorder.”

In fact, their President said that,”Contemporary research indicates that individuals’ problematic sexual behavior may often be better explained by other factors, including a high sex drive, mental health issues (e.g., depression, anxiety) or culturally influenced guilt or shame.”

And in spite of that announcement, one can still find a shitload of articles about "porn addiction," not only on religious-based blogs, but even a major "professional" psychology website.  No wonder people are confused.  The "professional" community can't even get its story straight!

Otherwise normal, healthy adults demonstrate an enthusiasm for all sorts of interests, sexual and otherwise.  Some people are overly-passionate about football, or NASCAR, or fishing, or hunting, or guns.  Basically, just fill in the blank _______. Some people can't seem to stay away from the dessert table at the buffet.  And some of us are passionate about erotica and masturbation.  That doesn't make us "addicts."

I think a lot of enthusiastic masturbators like to use that word,"addiction."  But unless you got fired from your job because you had to stay home to masturbate, or you don't have any friends because all you want to do is jack-off, that doesn't make you an "addict."

There are people who are compulsive gamblers, who have lost their savings, their home, and worse.  Now THAT's destructive behavior.

Looking at erotic pictures and stroking your cock is simply not "addiction."

The problem is - IMO - that some people just lack sufficient self-control and moderation.  If "some" is good, "more" is better.  

If masturbation was truly addictive, don't you think that there would be more women that would exhibit irresponsible behavior?  They're capable of MULTIPLE orgasms, for gawd's sake!   We men can edge for a while, but eventually we end up ejaculating and then there's the refractory period.

Hey, if you're actually masturbating "all day," you've got problems other than sexual.  Go back and read the AASECT President's statement, above.

Psychology - like any other profession - has people that are knowledgeable and effective counselors.  And it also has those that could be best described as "sketchy."  Because, as we all know, there's big money in therapy.
