The new site format has the text of the stories too close to both the left and right margins. Often, it is difficult to read a story without having to use the slider at the bottom of the screen. Is there any chance that the site's margin formats can be made more narrow - or, in some other way, more legible?

There must be a lot of variation how the site renders on different platforms and browsers. I find the site tends to have very wide spaces on the sides on my screen.

Check your browser's capabilities: on mine I can hold ctrl and the +/- buttons to zoom in and out. I tend to zoom in a few levels when I log in to eliminate the white space and make the text larger. Perhaps you can use the same functionality to zoom out if you would like more space on the sides.
