Masturbation becoming more mainstream.....

Post by mushroomhead »

First of all, let me say that I hate Hollywood and all the crap that comes out in film nowadays. I hate and refuse to watch any remakes of films, which now seems to be the norm. I mean, remaking True Grit, Planet of the Apes, etc etc etc. This is terrible. But I already digress. Let me get to the point ( or pernt as Archie Bunker use to say ) of this thread.

Back in the day, the 70's that is, it was totally taboo to mention or even point in any direction to masturbation. But it is slowly being used nowadays. Thinking of a few movies or shows, Something About Mary comes to mind where he jacks off before going out on a date and Diaz finds the cum hanging from his ear and uses it as hair gel. That entire scene was hilarious. Saw a movie the other day called Premature, which was a mix of Groundhog Day and American Pie ( another flick that brought masturbation to the front ) which was about whenever this guy came, he ended up back to the morning the film started with, which made for some funny situations. Then, and I havent ever watched this show yet, but I have seen commercials. The show is called Maron and it is on IFC. I really have to check it out, as just in the commercials there have been references to masturbation, and even one commercial even said the word.

So, it seems apparent that maybe masturbation is becoming more acceptable than it has been in the past. Lets hope that this trend continues forward because it could open up many worlds with it being more acceptable. ;)

There's no doubt masturbation is more mainstream than before as is pornography. It's talked a lot more about in movies and so forth. I'm constantly seeing people on youtube or whatever talking about some porn they saw and "fapping" as the younger people call it. A change from former generations that is for sure.

Because of the internet and societies loosening sexual morals, masturbation has definitely become more mainstream. Until I joined sites like this, and other various similar sites over the years I didn't realize that there were so many men masturbating together, so many men tasting and eating their precum and cum and so many men that want to and do jack off other men and still consider themselves heterosexual.

with the internet, we have the opportunity to talk to people of every persuasion from around the country and the world. Masturbation is a dominate theme every where. many sites focus on masturbation and even the sites that do not focus on masturbation end up being mostly about masturbation. I agree it is more acceptable. I did not have an idea things were like this until I found these sites on line and it has been an eye opener.
I think at least part of the reasons for this is that STDs create the need for safe outlets and frankly, seeing it on line helps people feel more free and "inspired".

I think you're right. Just consider that awards show (I can't remember which, maybe a music awards fuckfest) a few weeks ago. The emcee -- Jimmy Fallon, I think -- said right off the bat something about "masturbation" and everyone laughed. I about fell off the couch. That's got to reflect the point you make if anything does.

I think it's true to say that although plenty of people did it on the quiet, masturbation was certainly a taboo subject up to - and including - the 1960s. Attitudes since then have liberalised and it's become more readily accepted which is a good thing as for many people it's a normal everyday activity. I'm not sure that proliferation of porn which has taken place in the last couple of decades is necessarily a good thing though. There was something to be said for people using their imaginations creatively.

Well yes, thanks to the efforts of women like Dr. Ruth and Betty Dodson, masturbation - as a legitimate form of sexual pleasure - has perhaps become more "mainstream," but I think we still have a long, long way to go. I always found it interesting that men I knew (friends and coworkers) would proudly talk about sex in terms of intercourse or in terms of having "conquered" some woman ("finally fucked her!"), but rarely - if ever - did they talk so proudly or boldly about masturbation. There was always this fallacious notion that masturbation was a young man's game or something for "losers" who couldn't get any pussy. What a steaming pile of BS.
And of course, in our lifetime, an Attorney General was fired for merely promoting the notion of masturbation.
And being somewhat of a porn connoisseur, I find it very interesting that the majority of male masturbation images on the internet are categorized under the tab of "gay." Also, that images of men and women masturbating TOGETHER are really rather rare. It's easy to find pics of single males or females masturbating - but TOGETHER, not so much. So, as I said, I think we still have a ways to go in making it "mainstream."

It has cum a long way from the 70's as I can attest, but still ways away from mainstream, but everyday getting closer. I mean, and this takes it back many years, one of my fav shows used to be House MD. I remember one show where someone asked what he was doing or what he was going to be doing, and he replied that he was masturbating all night. House was always " on the edge ", probably one main reason why I liked the show. But yes, as time goes on, there are more and more references to masturbating, but as a norm, it still is not accetable to talk about. I have tried on several occasions, and the result on many occasions, if not all has been, well, I guess not the best. On several occasions I have tried to bring up the topic. Mainly when I go grocery shopping, and I go to different stores and look for the best looking cashiers. They always say at the end, have a nice day or something to that effect, and on several occasions I have said, " Oh yeah, I am going to go home and masturbate for several hours' and BAM, that is the end of any conversation. Actually, one girl told me after I said that to " have fun" and I said Oh yeah, I always do, and she smiled, but every other single time, it was the end of any conversation. So it is safe to say that talking about it even in a casual mode is verbotten, LMAO

Masturbation was so taboo that I hid the fact that I masturbated daily for years. You'd be humiliated if you admitted to masturbation. Even nowadays some people consider that if you are having sex regularly you don't need to masturbate.

It doesn't help that a lot of insulting terms used for males are in reference to masturbation: Wanker, Yank, Jack Off, etc. No one wants to be a "Wanker" and so they avoid wanking...

Thankfully masturbation is becoming more mainstream and accepted. Growing up as a teenager in the 80"s no one would admit to stroking it, although porno magazines were passed around from sticky hand to sticky hand. Being a wanker was not cool. In the 90's and 2000's things improved. Many of my female friends admitted owning sex toys and I was even introduced to a couple, asked if I had batteries, and even asked If I could hear my housemates vibrator from the my bedroom next to hers. I became more open about masturbating and found most people to be more wary of someone who said they didn't masturbate. Why hide it? Lube up and own it!

At school I used to blush when I get called a wanker. Because as a teenage boy, of course I was. And whoever called me a wanker knew it too! It had the opposite effect on me. I got me turned on knowing that someone picture me enough wanking to call me a wanker.

Are these really from the 80s? They look very recent. I wouldn't know cause I wasn't born then but I thought picture qualities weren't that good then. Anyway, I grew up in the 2000s and boys all know that we all masturbate. It's not really a taboo topic among boys. Maybe a little, if you masturbate too much and never have a girlfriend. But we're all like that.

It just gets embarrassing when girls get curious and want to know how we boys do it, how often, and all that.

I echo what other old timers have said. In the 70s and 80s, here in the American deep south, nobody masturbated. I mean you could ask around and nobody would admit to it. My best friend in high school once said to me “I admit it, I masturbate” and i thought it was the coolest thing anyone had ever said. Although i stayed silent about the fact i was myself coming about a million times a week.

Also, remember Joycelyn Elders? Look her up on wikipedia. She got run off as the U.S. Surgeon General in the 90s because she suggested teens should be taught to masturbate instead of spreading around sexually transmitted infections and unwanted pregnancies. Apparently Americans wanted their kids knocked up and on penicillin instead of being told to go to a quiet place for some me-time.

Today is very different. So yes, even though masturbation has always been mainstream in terms of practice, it now is also a mainstream topic for conversation.

It's both. When I was a teenager I learned that I felt turned on when embarrassed, like when girls get curious about my masturbation, when they snuck into the boys toilet to peek at my dick, when they make fun of me. All are my best jerk off memories

This is one I favorited at xvideos (even commented on it 3 months ago), I find that style of content way more erotic than "regular" porn movies, there's a candid quality to the scenes or something that appeals to me. I wonder how it would feel to openly jerk off on a movie set, in front of an actress and all the other crew members?
