Labia

Earlier today, while I was at work, I happened to recollect the first time I ever heard the word labia. I was in tenth grade. I was listening to the audiobook version of Neuromancer by William Gibson. At the end of side one of tape one the story's 'hero' Case and his 'partner' Molly get it on!

'Now she straddled him again, took his hand and closed it over her, his thumb along the cleft of her buttocks, his fingers spread across the labia...' Labia? What was that? How could I find out? Who could I ask?

I had a crush on a girl named Amanda. She sat next to me in Biology. I fantasized about listening to Neuromancer with her in my bedroom and asking her about labia...and naturally, she would tell me...and show me...and so on, until sexuality no longer held any mysteries for me.

Yeah right!

Okay, so the likelihood of that happening was nil. I could barely even talk to Amanda in class. Still, the fantasy was very exciting and I masturbated to it many times.

By the way, later on in high school I gained access to a dictionary on a computer equipped with speech and looked up the definitions for labia and several related words. Big help that was. Getting a hands-on explanation from Amanda would have been more informative, not to mention fun!
